Monthly Challenges

Hello world. I thought I'd use this blog as my main place of "social media" if you can even call it that. I feel it's much less public than facebook, there's no random photos and quotes and political stories that people argue about. I am more inclined to post about things that I am interested in and would like the people I care about to know. If it's just me writing to myself and nobody looks at it, I'm ok with that too. Like a slightly less personal diary. This started because of my monthly challenges (I can't call them 30 day challenges since February is only 28 days and some months are 31). February's challenge was to not go on any social media (or similar unnecessary websites including online shopping). I didn't actually find it much of a challenge at all. The only times I missed social media was when I was curious about my friend's new baby or when I wanted to find good recipes and couldn't access my posted recipes on Pinterest. I'm not against other people who choose to go on Facebook or Pinterest or Twitter or Instagram or whatever other media's exist these days. I am not some hipster that's just saying "dude, I'd like to just free myself of the internet and enjoy the real world"

I'm just doing something that I think helps me enjoy the world a little bit more. I'm leading up to a life which has more simplicity because that's something that works for me a little bit better. i get distracted easily and I find myself unsatisfied in a life with objects and internet, lacking real human contact and travelling the world. Of course, I am realistic and will still use the internet. Hey, right now I've been on the computer for a little less than an hour and I'm not too disappointed. Anyway, I suppose I've explained myself enough. Now on to the challenges!

January I went gluten free. I didn't make it the entire month, I made it about 3 weeks, because I accidentally ate a doughnut hole at a Costco sample stand and when I didn't get a resultant stomach ache I said "well, I think I'll eat bread again!". The challenge did help me realize the variety of gluten free foods out there though and has made me cut back on my carbs. With a picky digestive system I feel that cutting back helps me feel a little better but I don't have enough discipline nor reason to cut back entirely. I will still enjoy a delicious piece of cake and maybe indulge in some pasta every now and then!

February, as already mentioned was social media free month. Which, as mentioned, wasn't too hard and has led me to delete my facebook profile (after courteously letting people know that I will be deleting it so that those I care about don't just go "what the hell?!"

March: Here's my biggest challenge yet. Minimum 10 minutes of muscle burning, sweat producing workout! This is going to be tough on my 12 hour shifts but I know it's possible! People do it! Even if I get home exhuasted, I can do my 10 minute workout video or do a quick circuit of sit-ups and push-ups and fit it in. I thought about cutting out sugar but since I'll be travelling half-way through this month I feel that would restrict me in trying things in a different country that I otherwise would like to try as a part of the experience of travel. And yes, I realize I'm writing this on March 2. I didn't complete my challenge yesterday so to make up for it, I'll continue until April 1.

I'm not sure yet what my challenge will be for April. I will still be out of the country during the majority of this month so I'd like to choose something that's challenging but also not restrictive to my travel experience. One thought was to take a picture a day but that wouldn't be a challenge at all until I got home. Another thought is to perhaps write a letter a day (even if I don't send it that day). Any suggestions I'd love to hear them in the comments section!

Until then, I'll post my attempts at working out and the ways I've met this monthly challenge!
