Back in Athens - 2 more days to go

Well I haven't updated this in a few days and now I am back in Athens at a very fast internet cafe. Apparently facebook won't work here because I changed my security settings for text message and do not have my phone here so anybody that isn't following this will have to wait until I return to hear about my trip.

We arrived in Athens yesterday evening and got to our hotel after 10pm. The last few days in Santorini were as beautiful as described. We went from one end of the island to the other, took a boat tour around the volcano and the ancient island of Therissia, jumped in the ocean and participated in a mud fight. We watched the sunset from the famous town of Oia, pronounced "EE-Yah" rather than the way I had been botching the pronounciation of "Oh- yah". We rented another Moto to drive around for both days and spent our second day exploring the rest of the island. I even drove it for a short while, but let C drive it most of the way with the crazy Greek traffic and the slow uphill stretches. Our hotel, "Blue Diamond Bay" was very nice with friendly owners and a pool that we didn't even spend an afternoon sitting by. Why come to greece to sit by a pool I say! At the end of our 2 days in Santorini we returned "The blue beast" (that's what we called this little quad) and walked along the black sand beach to our hotel where we were driven by the son of the hotel owner to the airport - 2 hours early - oops, my mistake reading 24 hour clock I thought we left at 6pm not 7pm so to be safe we had him bring us there for 5pm.. it wasn't that long of a wait though and they even had a rooftop cafe/bar.

Mykonos was slightly larger than Santorini but both were fairly comparable for price and things to do. Mykonos had less to do I think than Santorini though as Santorini has the volcano, ancient Thira, a monastary, boat tour, and lighthouse. Mykonos had the ancient ruins of Delos - a little island 1/2hr away from the mainland, and beaches, and of course the main shopping center was always an attraction.

Today we planned on seeing the Acropolis but unfortunately, as we didn't realize, it's a holiday today May 1st - "May Day" and none of the tourist sites are open. It's nice to just walk along the streets and relax though, finish up our shopping, and we will head to the beach this afternoon. Friday the Acropolis is only open at noon as well so even though we planned to go to Delphi tomorrow we will likely stay here and visit the Acropolis and other attractions in Athens and save Delphi for our last day. We might be tired when we arrive back in Athens for our flight the next day but I guess there is nothing to do when we fly out but sleep and sit, and spend all day sunday sleeping! Then to school first thing Monday! I am glad I chose to take this vacation, despite the money I am spending (a bit more than expected), but I will surely have some nice tan lines to show off when I get back home.
